It may contain only a handful of tracks from the Hoy Hoy album but, folks, stunning sound doesn’t begin to do justice to this EP. I would state categorically that there is not a single rock record on the TAS List that can hold a candle to it in terms of live-rock-in-your-living-room blasting power. This is one of the most Amazing Demo Discs of All Time. If it were an album I would put it on a Top Ten Best Sounding Rock and Pop List (if we had such a thing).

It’s really not fair to judge the Harry’s List by records like this, which have never been the man’s forte. We, on the other hand, know these kinds of records about as well as anyone can, and to prove it we would love to send you this copy.

And do you know how we discovered it many, many years ago? We had a couple of these promos lying around, and after shooting out the Hot Stamper Hoy-Hoys, we figured what the hell, throw one of them on just for fun. To our shock and dismay, it blew the doors off our BEST Hot Stamper pressings song for song. As good as those album sides sound, the EP took the same material to an entirely new level of sonic splendor.

Neil Young – Time Fades Away

Unlike most “live” albums, this one was made direct to tape, with no fixes or overdubs, and on the best pressings that warts-and-all approach really pays off. There’s good weight, real openness, and the tonality on these better copies is both rich and sweet. This kind of sound can put you right in the front row.

Finding a copy like this is no walk in the park. The stamper numbers are all over the map, providing little if any guidance. Also, since the album didn’t sell all that well and was never released on CD [although it may have been since this was written; we pay very little attention to that sort of thing], there just aren’t that many clean copies floating around.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young / 4 Way Street

  • These early Atlantic pressings boast roughly Nearly Triple Plus (A++ to A+++) grades or close to them on all FOUR sides, just shy of our Shootout Winner (side four actually won the shootout) – fairly quiet vinyl too
  • This live album gives you the “naked” sound of the real thing – the real voices and the real guitars and the real everything else, in a way that would never happen again
  • Bill Halverson worked his magic, but only the better pressings let his genius shine the way it does here
  • This is a record we rarely do shootouts for, simply because reasonably quiet, unscratched copies are getting more scarce by the day – much of what we can find is not in good enough condition to pass audiophile muster
  • 4 1/2 stars: “4 Way Street, released in April of 1971: a live double-LP set, chock-full of superb music distilled down from a bunch of nights on that tour that more than fulfilled the promise of the group.”
  • Rolling Stone raves that “Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young are all performers of unquestionable talent, and mostly because they stay out of each others’ way, 4 Way Street must surely be their best album to date.”

If you want to hear Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young rock out live in your listening room, this copy will let you do it. It’s not easy to find good sound on even one side of this album, let alone all four!

The Naked Sound of Live Music

The song “Triad,” just to cite one example, presents us with a lone David Crosby and his acoustic guitar. It’s as real sounding as anything I’ve ever heard from the band. Listening to that natural guitar tone brings home the fact that their studio recordings (and studio recordings in general) are processed and degraded compared to what the microphones must have picked up.

  • This is West Coast Jazz at its best, and if anyone can capture the feeling of jazz in a small club, it’s the engineers and producers at Contemporary
  • The sound is superb – airy, open, and spacious with a solid bottom end – the depth and definition are out of this world (particularly on side one)
  • “Considering how much music was documented, it is fortunate that trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenorman Richie Kamuca, pianist Victor Feldman, bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Shelly Manne were in top form for this enjoyable gig. The music is high-quality straightforward and uncomplicated bebop.”

Johnny Cash / Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison

  • Both sides of this early 360 Stereo pressing have killer sound for Cash’s 1968 live album, earning Nearly Triple Plus (A++ to A+++) grades, just shy of our Shootout Winner – fairly quiet vinyl too
  • It ain’t easy to find great sounding Johnny Cash records, but this copy had the sound we were looking for
  • This one is richer, smoother and sweeter than practically all others we played, with lots of body and excellent transparency
  • Cash’s vocals sound right on the money here – present, full and natural with virtually none of the hardness, strain and edge you get on the typical copy
  • It literally takes us years to find a handful of copies worthy enough to put on the site, so don’t miss out on this one if you’re a fan!
  • 5 stars: “…At Folsom Prison is the quintessential Johnny Cash album, the place where his legend burns bright and eternal.”

  • This 2-LP 6-Eye Stereo pressing boasts very good Hot Stamper sound or BETTER from start to finish
  • We guarantee there is more space, richness, presence, and performance energy on this copy than others you’ve heard or you get your money back – it’s as simple as that
  • Skip the Red Label pressings – the ones we’ve played were too thin and dry, which is sadly a sound far too common on Columbia reissues from the 70s
  • Marks and problems in the vinyl are sometimes the nature of the beast with these early pressings – there simply is no way around them if the superior sound of vintage analog is important to you
  • 4 1/2 stars: “Though short-lived, the unique character of this group was its sheer intensity and diversity of attack. Because of the departure of Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, Davis had to rely as much on a muscular attack in playing his instrument as his considerable gift for melodic improvisation. For his part, Mobley had the shoes of two monster players to fill, and he does so elegantly with a ton of fire in his playing. But it is Kelly and Chambers who really set the pace for this band.”

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – Getz-Gilberto #2

More Bossa Nova

  • With solid Double Plus (A++) live jazz sound throughout, this copy is guaranteed to blow the doors off any other Getz – Gilberto #2 you’ve heard
  • This vintage stereo pressing is one of only a handful to make it to the site in over three years – boy, are these hard to find in this kind of clean condition with good quality sonics
  • The music is so good that most of the early Van Gelder-mastered pressings were played to death
  • Fortunately a few survived the record players of their day – here is one of that will put any other pressing of the album you’ve heard to shame
  • Rich, tubey and musical, the sound is wonderful for these live performances of the two very different groups – one side features Getz, the other side Gilberto
  • 4 stars: “Getz/Gilberto #2 holds its own with an appealing selection of fine jazz and Bossa Nova cuts.”

The Odds Are Stacked

This is an All-Time Jazz Classic and it’s a cryin’ shame that we can’t find more copies. Most are in mono, upwards of 80% of them, and we simply do not care for the sound of this music in mono. If you want to experience a live recording properly, you need space, ambiance, and imaging, three things mono does not do well.

And nine out of ten copies we see are simply not in the condition most audiophiles would find acceptable. Multiply 20% (the stereo copies) by 10% (the decent copies) and you’re left with a pool of 2% — one out of fifty — to pick from in order to acquire enough copies with which to do a shootout. Ouch.

Those are so pretty long odds, and they go a long way toward explaining why this is the first Hot Stamper pressing of this title to hit the site in years.

If you love this Brazilian-flavored cool jazz as much as we do, you might want to snap this one up. Who knows when we’ll find another one?

  • 4 1/2 stars on AllMusic, just check the tracklisting and get ready to hear these NY classics come to life

Eagles – Eagles Live

  • These vintage pressings of the band’s first live album boast solid Double Plus (A++) sound or BETTER on all FOUR sides
  • This copy is remarkably spacious, full-bodied and natural, with a nicely extended top end, plenty of space around the instruments and vocals, and few of the problems that plagued many pressings we played (discussed below)
  • The album provides a balanced document of the band’s musical history – four tracks were recorded in 1976, the rest in 1980
  • Problems in the vinyl are sometimes the nature of the beast with these Classic Rock records – there simply is no way around them if the superior sound of vintage analog is important to you
  • That said, this title in particular is almost always noisy, which is why you will rarely find it on our site — most of what we buy is just too noisy to sell

  • An excellent pressing, with lovely richness and warmth, real space and separation between the instruments
  • Recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, this 1970 release showcases Evans’s stylings in the trio setting that marked his best work
