  • Here is an early Contemporary pressing (only the second copy to hit the site in years) with two solid Double Plus (A++) or BETTER sides
  • You won’t believe how natural, rich, tonally correct and Tubey Magical this copy is – until you play it, of course
  • The first of the duo’s stereo test and demo records, followed by Sounds! on the Capitol label in 1966
  • Which is not really fair – nobody at Capitol could make records in 1966 of the quality Howard Holzer achieved for Contemporary in 1962

This record is mastered beautifully, with real transient attacks to all the percussion. When Shelly bangs on the bass drum it goes Ka-Boom and really rattles the walls. As a Demo Disc, this one is pretty hard to beat.

Bill Evans – Waltz for Debby

  • Waltz for Debby makes its Hot Stamper debut on this reissue pressing that boasts two incredible Nearly Triple Plus (A++ to A+++) sides, just shy of our Shootout Winner – fairly quiet vinyl too
  • Exceptionally spacious and three-dimensional, as well as relaxed and full-bodied – this pressing was a big step up over practically all other copies we played
  • This is not an original (those are terrible sounding), not a later reissue (also bad), and not the original OJC (which is decent on the best copies that have been cleaned -no better than passable otherwise) – no, this is modern pressing that — finally! — has the sound we have been trying to find for the last twenty or so years
  • Normally this is information we might not choose to share, as anyone can buy a modern OJC, but the fact that so many different OJC versions exist — I counted six different OJC-210s — means you probably would spend a lot more money finding a good sounding OJC pressing than the price we are charging
  • However, if you do find a great sounding OJC, be sure to drop us a line and let us know that stamper numbers — we would be curious to know if anyone was actually able to succeed with such an effort
  • If you want to hear the Tubey Magic, size and energy of this wonderful session from 1961, recorded live at the Village Vanguard in New York, this pressing will let you do that
  • 5 stars: “Evans chose the material here, and, possibly, in some unconscious way, revealed on these sessions … a different side of his musical personality that had never been displayed on his earlier solo recordings or during his tenures with Miles Davis and George Russell: Evans was an intensely romantic player, flagrantly emotional, and that is revealed here in spades on tunes such as ‘My Foolish Heart’ and ‘Detour Ahead.'”

Ray Charles / All Time Great Country and Western Hits – Better Sound than the Originals? Can It Really Be True?

  • These vintage ABC pressings boast superb Double Plus (A++) sound or close to it on all FOUR sides
  • If you could only have one Ray Charles album, it would have to be this one – you’ll have a hard time doing better than this very copy
  • What was especially shocking about this shootout is that in some ways the better sounding copies of the reissue not just the equal of, but actually best their original album counterparts
  • 22 classic songs on two LPs, including huge hits like “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “You Don’t Know Me,” “Oh Lonesome Me,” “Bye Bye Love,” and much more – no wonder AMG gave both discs 5 stars
  • This is some big, bold, absolutely glorious Tubey Magical analog (particularly on sides one, two and four) – the tape to disc transfer is hard to fault, making a mockery of the audiophile remasters to come
  • There are some bad marks (as is sometimes the nature of the beast with these vintage LPs) on “You Win Again” and “Some Day,” but once you hear just how excellent sounding this copy is, you might be inclined, as we were, to stop counting ticks and just be swept away by the music

The music is wonderful. Just listen to that swingin’ horn section behind Ray on Hey, Good Lookin’. They are hot! And Bye Bye Love just plain ROCKS.

Both these LPs have the kind of Tubey Magical Midrange that modern pressings cannot BEGIN to reproduce. Folks, that sound is gone and it sure isn’t showing any sign of coming back. (more…)

Gerry Mulligan – Jeru

More Jazz Recordings Featuring the Saxophone

  • Here is an outstanding black print 360 Stereo pressing of Jeru (only the second copy to hit the site in nineteen months ) with Double Plus (A++) grades or BETTER from start to finish
  • Both if these sides are tubier, more transparent, more dynamic, with plenty of that jumpin’ out of the speakers quality that only The Real Thing (an old record) ever has
  • It’s hard to imagine any reissue, vintage or otherwise, that can beat the sound of this LP – we sure couldn’t find one
  • Our most recent shootout was a tough one – the winning copy ticked the boxes for audiophile sound and no marks that play but was quite noisy, while our Nearly White Hot copy had the audiophile sound and surfaces but some pretty bad marks that prevented it from even making it to the site
  • Those of you looking for a top copy with that coveted trifecta of sound, surfaces, and no marks, check back with us in a year or two and hopefully we will have better results to show for our efforts
  • “Jeru flawlessly swings with a relaxed, throbbing, positive life force… The recorded sound, achieved by an unidentified engineer at Nola Penthouse Studio in New York City, has remarkable presence and three-dimensionality.”

  • Wonderful Living Stereo sound throughout this original Shaded Dog pressing, with both sides earning solid Double Plus (A++) grades or close to them
  • Hard to find them quiet, though – for whatever reason, this title was rarely if ever pressed on quiet vinyl
  • Our favorite performance of the Tchaikovsky — when you hear it played by the BSO, guided by the baton of the supremely talented Charles Munch, you know you are hearing the work performed with the greatest skill and interpreted as authentically as is humanly possible
  • Spacious, rich and smooth (particularly on side two) – only vintage analog seems capable of reproducing all three of these qualities without sacrificing resolution, staging, imaging or presence
  • Our White Hot Shootout Winner was simply amazing sounding — some of the best orchestral sound we have heard lately, especially audible in exceptionally breathy flutes and sweet strings
  • It was a quite a step up in sound quality over even the closest contender, which just goes to show how hard it is to come across these very special pressings no matter how many Shaded Dogs you play

Sonny Rollins – The Bridge
  • Seriously good Living Stereo sound throughout this 70s reissue pressing, with both sides earning solid Double Plus (A++) grades
  • It took us close to ten years to track down enough originals as well as the right reissues — so many to choose from, and so many of them just awful sounding — to get our most recent shootout going
  • Both of these sides are remarkably clean and clear with wonderful size, clarity and transparency, with real texture to the instruments and an abundance of energy
  • Of all the reissues we played, this one sounded the best, which came as a (costly) surprise
  • The sax sounds right, and played loud enough it’s almost as if you’re hearing the real instrument and not just a recording of one
  • 4 1/2 stars: “The interplay between Rollins and [guitarist Jim] Hall is consistently impressive, making this a near-classic and a very successful comeback.”

  • It has taken us close to ten years to track down enough orginals (and reissues) to get this shootout going, and the very high price of this copy reflects the work that went into finding it
  • Although the best originals will always win our shootouts, the early reissues from 1975 with the later cover can sound quite good – ten years ago those were the ones that won our shootout, but now we know better
  • Here’s just one of the things we had to say about this killer copy in our notes: “Tubey and sweet and silk all over. Perfect.”
  • The sax sounds just right, and played loud enough it’s almost as if you’re hearing the real instrument and not just a recording of it

  • It’s also fairly quiet at Mint Minus Minus, a grade that even our most well-cared-for vintage classical titles have trouble playing at
  • Both sides boast full brass and an especially clear, solid, present piano, one with practically no trace of smear — the right combination of richness and clarity is what allows the best pressings of this album to sound like live music
  • With huge amounts of hall space, weight and energy, this is a Demo Disc by any standard
  • Some old record collectors (like me) say classical recording quality ain’t what it used to be – here’s all the proof anyone with two working ears and top quality audiophile equipment would need to make that case
  • Speakers Corner did a creditable job remastering the record back in the early days of Heavy Vinyl, but one thing you can be sure of: theirs won’t hold a candle to the Hot Stamper pressings we are offering here
