Hot Stamper Pressings of the Music of Tchaikovsky Available Now

This budget Whitehall pressing is one of the most incredible sleepers in the entire classical catalog, with SUPERB sound as well as performances of the highest quality from the Vienna Festival Orchestra.

The sound is big and bold, spacious, open and sweet in the best golden age tradition. Superior pressings of this recording would give all but the best Shaded Dogs, Londons and Mercs a serious run for their money, beating most of them handily. Yes, it’s that good. The string tone and rosiny texture on side two are especially noteworthy.

There’s a freedom from coloration on either side that is positively refreshing after playing so many second-rate vintage classical recordings. (more…)

This review is from way back in the olden days (2005) before we were doing regular shootouts for all the albums we sell, so take it for what it’s worth.

In 2005 we had been seriously into collecting the highest quality record pressings for more than thirty years, yet it was obvious that we still had a lot to learn. In 2004 we started selling vintage vinyl with Hot Stampers, and practically every shootout we did taught us something new and interesting about records.

Much of that information ended up here, on a blog dedicated to teaching audiophiles how they can find better sounding pressings using the methods we pioneered.

We wanted to share with other like-minded audiophiles what we’ve discovered about higher quality vinyl and, even more importantly, we wanted to stress that experimenting with records under rigorously controlled conditions is the best way to learn about their sound quality.


Our Old Review

This import pressing has some astonishing qualities, qualities we are not used to hearing on vintage Golden Age recordings such as this (or or any other recordings, truth be told).

This 1964 release — our pressing is the whiteback reissue, which we tend to prefer — has 3-D-like clarity and spaciousness that we could hardly believe.

The stage is DEEP and you can hear all the way to the back of it.

The width of the stage is dramatically wider than practically any record I can remember playing in the last year or two. I felt as though my listening room got bigger when playing this record.

And the dynamics are explosive. This pressing can really get LOUD when it wants to.

In some respects it’s hard to beat. But not, alas, hard to fault.

It lacks weight down low, whomp as we like to call it.

Ballet Favorites on VICS and Soria from 2011

This RCA Plum Label Victrola of Ballet Favorites (VICS 1066) has an AMAZING SOUNDING side one — it’s unbelievably spacious and three-dimensional with depth that goes on for DAYS. 

Side one earned its two pluses with the kind of spacious, rich, sweet sound you’ve come to expect from Super Hot Stampers. Note the correct sounding tape hiss — a dead giveaway that the highs are going to be correct.

Funny tape hiss is the hallmark of Classic Records and Mobile Fidelity, a dead giveaway that their highs will be phony and boosted.

Side two would earn an A++ grade for the Delibes work that starts out the side. The strings are ever so slightly steely compared to side one, but in most respects the two sides sound quite similar. Giselle, the other work on side two, is not as good. It suffers from compressor distortion in the loud passages. It would earn about an A+ grade if we graded the two works separately. (more…)

Duke Ellington – The Nutcracker Suite

  • This original 6-Eye Stereo pressing is doing practically everything right, with killer Nearly Triple Plus (A++ to A+++) sound from first note to last – just shy of our Shootout Winner
  • Both of these sides are open and spacious with real depth to the soundfield and lots of separation between the various instruments, a very important quality for a large ensemble recording like this one
  • Rich, solid bass; you-are-there immediacy; energy and drive; instruments that are positively jumping out of the speakers – add it all up and you can see that this copy had the sound we were looking for

This is a wonderful album featuring Duke and his orchestra doing a jazzy interpretation of the famous Nutcracker Suite, and on a copy like this the sound is incredible!

You Say Your Shaded Dog Just Sounds Like an Old Record?

The better pressings of LSC 2328 have some of the best sound we have ever heard for The Nutcracker. We’ve played recordings of the work by the dozens, on the greatest Golden Age labels of all time, including the likes of Mercury, RCA and London. (Our current favorites of both the suites and the complete ballet are those conducted by Ansermet for Decca.)

The CSO, as one might expect, plays this work with more precision and control than most others. They also bring more excitement and dynamic contrasts to their performance, adding greatly to our enjoyment of the music.

Some may find the performances a bit rushed. That was our experience during our most recent shootout.

But skip 9s/6s. We had two copies and both of them sounded too much like an old record.

Pressings with those stampers might be passable, even to some degree enjoyable, especially when played on an old school system, but they would not be worth bothering with on the high quality modern equipment we use.

There are quite a number of other records that we’ve run into over the years with a catalog of obvious shortcomings — obvious to us but not necessarily to others — and we’ve broken them down into the three major labels that account for most of the best classical and orchestral titles we’ve had the pleasure to play.

  • With STUNNING Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) Living Stereo sound or close to it throughout, this vintage RCA Red Seal reissue pressing is the BEST pressing of this recording we have ever heard
  • Both of these sides are exceptionally detailed, with an abundance of space around all the players, the unmistakable sonic hallmark of the properly-mastered, properly-pressed vintage analog LP
  • This copy is rich, 3D, full-bodied, and dynamic, with the clarinet especially musical
  • We noted that the sound on this later label pressing could not be beat — it was so much more roomy, spacious and detailed, without the crudity of the Shaded Dogs that we mistakenly expected to win the shootout
  • The performance is faster than our other favorite, the Ansermet, and fans of the work will have to determine for themselves which they prefer

This RCA reissue pressing of LSC 2328 has some of the BEST sound we have ever heard for The Nutcracker, and we’ve played them by the dozens, on the greatest Golden Age labels of all time, including, but not limited to, the likes of Mercury, RCA and London.

In a somewhat (but not too) surprising turn of events, the reissue pressing we are offering here beat all the originals and early reissues we could throw at it. Finally, this legendary Mohr/Layton production can be heard in its full glory!

If you like your Nutcracker exciting and dynamic, this is the copy for you.

Don’t buy into that record collecting / audiophile canard that the originals are better.

A Wealth of Recordings

For our most recent shootout we played Ansermet’s performance of the Suites on London, as well as pressings by Reiner and Fiedler, both of whom opted against using the Suites as Tchaikovsky wrote them, preferring instead to create a shorter version of the complete ballet with excerpts of their own choosing.

The CSO, as one might expect, plays this work with more precision and control than any other. They also bring more excitement and dynamic contrasts to their performance, adding greatly to our enjoyment of the music.

We like our recordings to have as many live music qualities as possible, and those qualities really come through on a record such as this when reproduced on the full-range speaker system we use.

Ansermet breathes life into this ballet as only he can and the Decca engineering team led by Roy Wallace do him proud.

One of our good customers had this to say about some Hot Stampers he purchased recently. 

Hey Tom, 

I wanted to give you my impressions of the hot stamper (vs. the Speakers Corner Decca reissue) before going out of town for a bit.

Crank it up. Sounds really good turned up loud so I knew I was going to be in for a treat. There is an airiness to the recording where the instruments seem to float in a 3D space in the soundstage. I also noticed an improved clarity of the instruments themselves; in particular, the triangles, flute, and strings.

Yes, these differences are obvious to us, because we already have the best pressings, so the Heavy Vinyl stuff is always wrong or worse in some way that is not hard to hear. Back to back it does not take a pair of golden ears to hear these kinds of differences.

Funny, we discussed this yesterday and as you said, until you compare multiple pressings you might think you already have a great recording. Another big difference I noticed was the tightness and solidity of the bottom end. The Decca [Heavy Vinyl reissue] seemed to smear the low frequency content compared to the London.

This happens a lot. The smear is everywhere on these newly remastered records but sometimes you can hear it most clearly in one area or another. In this case you heard it most clearly in the bass, but it’s everywhere.

The ONLY thing I miss is the flow of the full ballet. The ballet seems to tell a nice complete story where the suite just gives me the reader’s digest version — sort of a greatest hits if you will, and does not allow one to immerse themselves in the whole experience. Ideally, a hot stamper of the full ballet would be pretty amazing I am guessing.

We can definitely get you the complete ballet at some point, but these shootouts take years to get going.

I would say your best bet is to return the record since it doesn’t seem to be the way you want to hear the music and we can put you on the want list for the next complete version we find.

Sonic Grade: C or Better 

Probably a fairly good Classic Records album. When I played this record years ago, I thought it was one of the better Classic RCA titles. You can be sure it won’t sound like the original — [almost] no Classic record does — but it might be pretty good all things considered. One thing to consider is that the original in clean condition sells for many thousands of dollars!
