Deep Purple – Burn

Up next, the intro to the equally timeless ‘Might Just Take Your Life,’ however simple from a technical perspective, remains one of organist Jon Lord’s signature moments; and the downright nasty ‘Lay Down, Stay Down’ roared behind wildly careening starts and stops and a fantastic Ritchie Blackmore guitar solo which left no doubt as to who was the band’s primal force, regardless of lineup.”

Herbie Hancock – Blow-Up (The Original Sound Track Album)

More Jazz Recordings of Interest

  • You’ll find solid Double Plus (A++) grades on both sides of this early MGM pressing
  • Full-bodied, warm and natural with plenty of space around all of the players, this is the sound of vintage analog – accept no substitutes
  • If you want a jazz primer that introduces you to the different ways jazz groups are arranged, we can hardly think of a better record
  • 4 1/2 stars: “A young Herbie Hancock contributed the bulk of the score to Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 screen classic, evoking the ambience of swinging London with grooves that create effective bluesy moods on the slow pieces, and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks.”

Herbie Hancock manages to get a lot of different jazz artists to play some of the most interesting jazz I’ve ever heard. I have no idea who all is playing but each of the different songs involved different players playing in different groupings: sometimes it’s guitar and organ, sometimes it’s saxophone-led quartet; it pretty much runs the gamut of jazz. And the amazing thing is every track is great. And the sound is great.

Trading [departed vocalist] John Foxx’s glam rock stance for Ure’s aristocratic delivery, Vienna recasts the band as a melodramatic synth pop chamber ensemble with most of the group doubling on traditional string quartet instruments and the synthesizers often serving to emulate an orchestra. It was a bold move that took awhile to pay off, but when the monolithic title track was released, the Ure lineup became the band’s most identifiable one almost overnight.”

Thin Lizzy – Johnny the Fox

More British Blues Rock

  • A Johnny the Fox like you’ve never heard, with solid Double Plus (A++) grades on both sides – exceptionally quiet vinyl too
  • This vintage UK pressing has real depth to the soundfield, full-bodied, present vocals, plenty of bottom end weight, and lovely analog warmth
  • The sonics are lively, punchy, and powerful – with all due respect, it should murder whatever copies you may have
  • 4 stars: “All the same strengths [of Jailbreak] are still here — the band still sounds as thunderous as a force of nature, Phil Lynott’s writing is still graced with elegant turns of phrase, [and] his singing is still soulful and seductive…”

This vintage UK Vertigo pressing has the kind of Tubey Magical Midrange that modern records can barely BEGIN to reproduce. Folks, that sound is gone and it sure isn’t showing signs of coming back. If you love hearing INTO a recording, actually being able to “see” the performers, and feeling as if you are sitting in the studio with the band, this is the record for you. It’s what vintage all analog recordings are known for — this sound.

  • Dorati and the LSO’s performance of these classical works debuts on the site with a lush, tubey, and dynamic Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) side one mated to a solid Double Plus (A++) side two
  • Both of these sides have an abundance of energy, loads of detail and texture, remarkable transparency and excellent clarity – all qualities the best classical pressings have in abundance
  • What both sides did not have in our shootout was a huge, dynamic, powerful low end
  • Side one is the only side that had the bass deserving of a top Mercury — consequently no copy earned a 3+ grade on side two
  • The sound is big and open, and like so many Mercury recordings with the London Symphony, it’s rich and full-bodied, not thin and nasally as is so often the case with their domestically recorded releases
