*Records that Sound Best This Way

These titles have lighter gray text at the bottom of the listing to help the reader decode the pressings that have the potential for the best sound, based on our Hot Stamper shootouts.

For example, “Early=Best” simply means that the right early pressings usually sound the best on this title.

In addition to early pressings, here are the records that we’ve identified using the remaining five attributes:

Imported vinyl (Import=Best); domestic vinyl (Domestic=Best); in mono (Mono=Best); in stereo (Stereo=Best), and lastly, on the right reissue (Reissue=Best)

Keep in mind that any given pressing with the “wrong” attributes, e.g., import, reissue, etc., can be better sounding than one with the “right” attributes, e.g., domestic, early, etc. There are far too many factors that go into the making of a record for any of this information to be useful without a large sample of LPs.

In other words, these attributes are best seen as a rough guide to help point the reader in the right direction.

Ry Cooder – Chicken Skin Music

More Roots Rock

  • An early Reprise pressing of Cooder’s 1976 release with outstanding Double Plus (A++) sound or close to it throughout
  • Side two is super transparent, lively and tonally correct from top to bottom with lots of deep, well-defined bass and remarkably present and breathy vocals, and side one is not far behind in all those areas
  • The stringed instruments on this side two all sound natural, correct, and wonderful, with the accordion sounding particularly good here — you can really hear the instrument moving some air (and side one is not far behind in all those areas)
  • 4 stars: “Chicken Skin Music is probably Ry Cooder’s most eccentric record since his first, but it’s also one of his most entertaining.”

Art Pepper – Gettin’ Together

More Contemporary Label Jazz Recordings

  • A vintage copy of Pepper’s 1960 release with stunning Nearly Triple Plus (A++ to A+++) sound from first note to last, just shy of our Shootout Winner – remarkably quiet vinyl too
  • Our most recent shootout involved 14 pressings, from the Black Label originals to the last of the vintage OJCs (of which there are two versions, neither one making the cut)
  • We love the amazingly natural, uncolored, un-hyped sound Roy DuNann and Howard Holzer were able to achieve at Contemporary back in the day
  • You will hear, as we did playing this very copy, that there’s simply nothing between you and the musicians
  • Note that even the best of the early Black Label pressings are not remotely in the same league as the pressings that win our shootouts
  • 4 1/2 stars: “Pepper utilizes Davis’ sidemen on this 1960 near-classic… as usual, Pepper brings something very personal and unique to his playing; he sounds like no one else.”

Joni Mitchell – Clouds

More of the Music of Joni Mitchell

  • This vintage copy boasts solid Double Plus (A++) grades or BETTER from top to bottom – the first copy to make the site since our last shootout in 2022
  • Check out the clear transients on Joni’s guitar — you can really hear her moving her hands around the fretboard and pulling on the strings
  • It’s tough to find this album in clean shape with this kind of warm, natural sound (something the new reissue is no doubt profoundly lacking)
  • Stick with the Two Tone labels if you want the highest quality sound – the later Tan labels can be good but even the best of them are many steps down in sound quality from the White Hot shootout winners
  • This would most likely include any modern repress on Heavy Vinyl, although to be honest we have never played one for Clouds – what would be the point?
  • 4 1/2 stars: “Clouds is a stark stunner, a great leap forward for Joni Mitchell. Vocals here are more forthright and assured than on her debut and exhibit a remarkable level of subtle expressiveness. Guitar alone is used in accompaniment, and the variety of playing approaches and sounds gotten here is most impressive.”

Everything you could ask for from this album is here on this copy: stunning clarity and transparency, breathy vocals, richness, sweetness, warmth, and tons of ambience.

Check out the clear transients on the acoustic guitar — you can really hear her moving her hands around the fretboard and pulling on the strings. The immediacy is mindblowing — Joni and her guitar are right there in the room with you, without being forced into your lap.

The best sounding copies of Clouds are the ones that put Joni and her guitar right there in your living room.

Hampton Hawes – The Green Leaves of Summer

  • Outstanding sound throughout this vintage Contemporary pressing, with both sides earning solid Double Plus (A++) grades
  • We discovered that even the best of the early Black Label pressings are not remotely in the same league as the pressings that win our shootouts
  • Only this pressing and our shootout winner earned grades of 2+ or better on both sides, which means, among other things, that truly top quality sound is very hard to find on this title!
  • This pressing boasts clean, clear and lively sound, with lovely space around all of the instruments
  • Not an easy title to find, and this one is about as quiet as we have yet to find – at the high end of Mint Minus Minus
  • The early G1 OJC pressings were bright, hot and veiled and are best avoided by audiophiles looking for even halfway decent sound
  • 4 1/2 stars: “Hawes had lost nothing of his swinging style while in prison, as can be heard on such numbers as ‘Vierd Blues,’ ‘St. Thomas’ and ‘Secret Love,’ and he was just starting to hint at moving beyond bop. Recommended.”

This Contemporary LP has wonderful Contemporary All Tube sound, courtesy of the amazing engineering of Howard Holzer. The piano is right — weighty and percussive with a full-bodied tone. The bass definition is superb. The clarity and transparency here are nothing short of breathtaking.

Steve Ellington’s brush work on the snare is very clear on this copy, helping to push the music to the next level. On the great Sonny Rollins track, “St. Thomas,” Steve Ellington is doing some fancy playing on the rims of his drums — the ambience bouncing off the studio walls is amazing.

A major highlight here is the completely original interpretation of “Blue Skies.” Hawes gets going with some really complicated two-handed playing. With the superb clarity of this copy you won’t miss a note.

The Brothers Johnson – Right on Time

More Soul, Blues, and R&B

  • Boasting two STUNNING Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) sides, this vintage A&M pressing could not be beat
  • A tough shootout, as no other copy earned a 3+ grade on either side, which simply means that when you find a top copy, it sets such a high standard that everything else ends up getting marked down
  • The sound is huge – big, wide, deep, and open, with a punchy bottom end and rhythmic energy to spare, as well as cleaner, smoother, sweeter upper mids and a more extended top
  • Analog at its Tubey Magical finest – you’ll never play a CD (or any other digitally sourced material) that sounds as good as this record as long as you live
  • 4 1/2 stars: “An enjoyable and even infectious collection that, in its sophistication, certainly avoids being just some sort of dry run for [Quincy] Jones … producing Michael Jackson’s wildly successful Off the Wall and Thriller albums…”

Pink Floyd – Meddle

  • You’ll find incredible Nearly Triple Plus (A++ to A+++) sound throughout this British copy of this shockingly well recorded album, just shy of our Shootout Winner – fairly quiet vinyl too
  • Here is the Tubey Magic, presence, size and space we guarantee you have never heard on Meddle no matter what pressing you may own
  • Top 100 audiophile demonstration quality recording on a par with Dark Side of the Moon, which is really saying something
  • 4 1/2 stars: “Pink Floyd were nothing if not masters of texture, and Meddle is one of their greatest excursions into little details, pointing the way to the measured brilliance of Dark Side of the Moon and the entire Roger Waters era.”
  • This killer reissue puts to shame the originals we’ve auditioned, and the reissues we offer on the site are guaranteed to do the same
  • If you’re a Pink Floyd fan, and what audiophile wouldn’t be?, this title from 1971 is clearly one of their best

Eric Clapton – Journeyman

More of the Music of Eric Clapton

  • A Journeyman like you’ve never heard, with INCREDIBLE Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) grades on both sides of this vintage import pressing – fairly quiet vinyl too
  • Forget the commonly dry-sounding domestic copies – the pressings mastered in Germany and the UK are the only ones good enough for us to put in a shootout
  • Rich, lively, spacious – the right pressings are surprisingly good-sounding for a recording from 1989
  • The big hit was “Pretending,” but “Bad Love” (both went to Number One) won the Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal
  • 4 1/2 stars: “… a laid-back and thoroughly engaging display of Clapton’s virtuosity. On the whole, it’s the best studio album he’s released since Slowhand.”

Dvorak / Violin Concerto – A Killer Philips Recording

More of the Music of Antonin Dvorak

  • Excellent sound throughout this Philips import pressing of Dvorak’s Classical Masterpieces, with both sides earning solid Double Plus (A++) grades or BETTER – exceptionally quiet vinyl too
  • The orchestral passages are rich and sweet, the violin present, its harmonics gloriously intact
  • We audiophiles are fortunate indeed that a violinist of Accardo’s skill and taste recorded this piece for Philips at a time when their recording technology was still capable of capturing the sound of his violin in rich, warm, sweet, clear analog
  • A superb performance from Salvatore Accardo, not only competitive with the best we have heard, but superior – we know of none better
  • A superb performance from Salvatore Accardo, not only competitive with the best we have heard, but superior – we know of none better
  • These links will take you to some of the orchestral “sleeper” recordings we’ve discovered with Demo Disc sound

Yes, it was still possible to record classical music properly in 1980, though not many labels managed to pull it off. (Londons from this era are especially opaque and airless. We find them as irritating and frustrating as most of the Heavy Vinyl releases being foisted on the audiophile public today.)

This is still analog, with the better copies displaying much of the Tubey Magic of 50s and 60s vinyl without as much compressor distortion (the Achilles’ heel of so many of the great recordings from the Golden Era).

Accardo is an accomplished performer of the works of Paganini, but those recordings are on DG and we would not expect them to be of acceptable audio quality for our customers. We will investigate further of course, as Paganini’s works for violin are some of the most sublime in the repertoire.

Dvorak – Cello Concerto / Starker

More Mercury Classical Recordings

  • Starker and the LSO’s sublime performance, here with big, lively and rich Double Plus (A++) sound throughout this pressing of SR-90303
  • It’s also fairly quiet at Mint Minus Minus, a grade that even our most well-cared-for vintage classical titles have trouble playing at
  • The cello is present and immediate, with sound that is wonderfully full and harmonically natural
  • Some old record collectors (like me) say classical recording quality ain’t what it used to be – here’s all the proof anyone with two working ears and top quality audiophile equipment needs to make the case
  • As you may well imagine, shootouts for this album are exceedingly rare. For a sought-after TAS List title such as this, we’re lucky to be able to do one every five years or so. Until the next one comes around, please consider trying some of our other classical and orchestral Hot Stamper pressings

James Taylor – JT

More of the Music of James Taylor

  • A vintage copy of Taylor’s 1977 breakthrough album that was doing practically everything right, earning STUNNING Shootout Winning Triple Plus (A+++) grades or close to them on both sides
  • It’s a superb recording – a member of our Top 100, in fact – but it takes a pressing like this to show you just how big and lively it can sound
  • The big hits “Your Smiling Face” and “Handy Man” both sound great here – thanks, Val Garay!
  • Don’t waste your money on any copy that doesn’t have TML stampers on both sides – they never sound any good
  • Interestingly, this time around even the worst side of any TML pressing earned a (1.5+) Hot Stamper grade
  • If you are using the Prelude Record Cleaning system on the right machines, you can’t go wrong with the early pressings of this title (although you can go much more right if you do a shootout and find a top copy like this one)
  • Marks in the vinyl are sometimes the nature of the beast with these vintage LPs – there simply is no way around them if the superior sound of vintage analog is important to you
  • 4 stars: “JT was James Taylor’s best album since Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon because it acknowledged the darkness of his earlier work while explaining the deliberate lightness of his current viewpoint, and because it was his most consistent collection in years.”
  • If I were to compile a list of my favorite rock and pop albums from 1977, this album would definitely be on it

The good copies really rock on songs like Honey Don’t Leave L.A. or I Was Only Telling A Lie, yet have lovely, delicate vocals on ballads such as Another Grey Morning or There We Are (two of our favorite songs on the album).

Just turn up the volume and play the opening to Honey Don’t Leave L.A. — this is James Taylor and his super-tight studio band at the peak of their powers. Russ Kunkel hits the drum twice, then clicks his sticks together so quickly you can hardly notice it, then goes back to the drums for the rest of the intro.

On the best copies, the subtleties of his performance are clearly on display. Until the right copies came along, we had never even noticed that stick trick. Now it’s the high point of the whole intro.

Here are more of our favorite records with exceptionally punchy bass and here are more of our favorite records with exceptionally punchy drums.
