Kevin Gray’s Version of Waltz for Debby Is Really Something

During our most recent shootout for Waltz for Debby we took the opportunity to play the 2023 Craft pressing cut by Kevin Gray.

It seems to have a nice list of features, among them AAA mastering using the Original Master Tape.

What could go wrong?

  • Craft Original Jazz Classics Series
  • 180g Vinyl LP
  • (AAA) Lacquers Cut from the Original Tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio
  • Pressed at RTI
  • Tip-On Jacket with OBI

Plenty could go wrong, and did, especially on side two.

Nice features apparently are not enough to make a good sounding record.

Below are our listening notes cataloging the problems with this remastered pressing. If you own this version of the album, listen for the shortcomings we describe. The better your stereo and room, the more obvious they will be.

And of course the opposite is true for those of you who have trouble hearing them.

Now, if you already bought this sorry excuse for an audiophile pressing and just like collecting records, and don’t really care what they sound like, you can stop reading right here, put the record on and just enjoy the music.

This Craft Pressing Was Definitely Born Under a Bad Sign

About a year ago we played the Craft pressing (CR00513) that had come out in 2023.

We have audition notes for lots of these dreadful Heavy Vinyl pressings sitting around. Sometimes they sit around for years. Obviously we are in no hurry to put them up.

The notes I took for the Craft pressing of Lush Life that Geoff Edgers played me still has not been posted, and he played me that record all the way back in 2022. For those of you who can’t wait for the complete review, I told him it sounded like a CD and proceeded to take it off the turntable.

At the time, I don’t think he understood how that could even be possible. He’d visited Bernie Grundman and read all the rave reviews for his work in the audiophile press. What do you mean his record sounds like a CD? Who the hell do you think you are anyway?

Geoff knows what that means now. I will leave it at that.

We were not surprised to find that the sound of this Craft pressing was terrible. Whoever this Jeff Powell is, I admit I’ve never heard of him, if you see his name on a remastered record, you might want to consider that if he can make a record that sounds this bad, he may not know what he is doing.

This strikes us as a safe bet.

Our notes for the album comprise all of five words. They read:

  • Not good
  • Blurry and congested

As you can see, we didn’t feel the need to spend too much time with it. When a record shows you right off the bat how badly mastered it is, we move on pretty quickly.

Brilliant Corners – This Pig Sure Wears Pretty Lipstick

During our most recent shootout of Brilliant Corners, we took the opportunity to play the Craft pressing cut by Bernie Grundman and released in 2023.

We thought it was godawful, the worst sounding version of the album we’ve ever played.

But how is that possible? Read all about the best practices being followed and look at the description of the fancy packaging below. Why would they go to all that trouble just to produce a bad souding record?

For the answer to that question, you will have to ask them. We’re stumped.

  • Pressed using a one-step lacquer process at RTI utilizing Neotech’s VR900 compound
  • All-analog mastering by Bernie Grundman from the original master tapes
  • Housed in a foil-stamped, linen-wrapped slipcase
  • Numbered and limited to 4,000

They used Neotech’s VR900 compound! Really?! That must be one awesome compound!

Apparently even the VR900 compound was not enough to save this pathetic excuse for a record.

For those of you who might be new to this blog, we should point out that we have been dumbfounded by Bernie Grundman’s work for more than twenty five years. The first RCA he remastered for Classic Records, LSC 1806, was so bright and the strings were so shrill that it probably lasted on our turntable maybe all of three minutes. My ears just couldn’t take it, even on a system that was dramatically darker and less revealing than the one we have now.

Equally bad sounding Classic Records were to follow by the hundreds.

Our quickie notes for side one are shown on the left. After hearing side one fall so short of the mark, we dropped it from the shootout and put the Craft pressing on the shelf to go back to whoever loaned it to us. Who cares what side two sounds like if side one is that bad? Time is money. We are in the business of finding good records to sell to our customers, not playing crap Heavy Vinyl that only the most hard-of-hearing collector types would consider owning.

Before long we had a change of heart. We thought we owed it to Bernie’s fans to be more thorough, so we took our best side two and played it against the Craft pressing.
