The Nightfly on MoFi – More of the Same Old Same Old

Hot Stamper Pressings of the Music of Donald Fagen Available Now

More MoFi phony EQ on the top right around 10k and sloppy bass.

You should be able to do a whole lot better and you sure won’t have to work very hard to do it.

Robert Ludwig is the man who knows how to cut this album, not Stan Ricker.

The properly pressed, properly cleaned Robert Ludwig-mastered copies are right in a way that the typical Half-Speed mastered or Heavy Vinyl pressing rarely is. The more critically one listens, the more obvious this distinction becomes.

The real thing just can’t be beat, and you can be pretty sure that the real thing is an old record.

If you are buying these audiophile pressings, take the advice of some of our customers and stop throwing your money away on Heavy Vinyl and Half-Speed mastered LPs.

At the very least let us send you a Hot Stamper pressing — of any album you choose — that can show you what is wrong with your remastered LP.

And if for some reason you disagree with us that our record sounds better than yours, we will happily give you all your money back and wish you the best.

  1. The Mofi pressing of The Nightfly version 1 sounds great!
If it sucked so badly, people would not be regularly paying $100+ for a copy on the secondary market.

I own many pressings of different albums too and I have compared them all. The half speed and Mofi pressings are usually sonically superior to the other pressings, in my opinion.

The MCA Audiophile version of Steely Dan Gaucho sounds superior to the normal MCA pressing, in my opinion.

    1. Dear Sir,
I think your stereo is not giving you a true picture of these records. We have a series of questions that we ask to get a better picture of your system:

If you want your claims to be taken seriously, by us or anybody else, you should consider providing some context for them. Here are some of the things we and no doubt others would like to know.

Tell us about your system, room, electricity, etc.. What do you feel are your system’s strengths and weaknesses?
Tell us what specific pressings you compared.
Tell us if you cleaned them, and if so, by what method.
Tell us what protocols you used to make sure the comparison was a fair one.
Tell us how you optimized the playback for each pressing, accounting for the difference in vinyl thickness, playback levels and the like.
Tell us what specifically you were listening for.
Tell us what tracks you played and what about those tracks made them good for testing.
Tell us in as much detail as possible the specific strengths and weaknesses of each of the pressings.
Got all that? OK. Please do your best to answer all eight questions and send them to tom@better-records.com.
Would love to see a picture of your sound room and system. Can you send one?

      Best, TP
